It is about time that people realize that sunlight is healthy for you. It is free and travels 100 million miles to get to you. The sunblock was unhealthy for you but it was a very profitable money making scam. The amount of vitamin D that a lifeguard gets is the best for health.
Chuck, thanks for your comment. I agree that exposure to sunlight is the natural and most effective way to make vitamin D. However, there are risks involved, particularly for people with fair skins who migrated in ever-increasing numbers from cooler climates to warmer ones during the 19th and 20th centuries. For example, there was massive emigration from Great Britain to Australia and the New World. Fair-skinned people in Australia suffer from the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. The people who are truly adapted to these climates are the native populations.
I agree that it is good to get some sun exposure but for people with fair skins this should be for brief periods on a regular basis rather than for long periods occasionally and, with our lifestyle today, this is difficult to control. Probably the best way to enhance and maintain our circulating vitamin D levels is through daily supplementation with Vitamin D3.
